To end Black History Month on a high note, we want to talk about Andre Hooks. Many students know him as he is a very dedicated staff member in the CW family working on the High School team. For Andre, obtaining a college degree is more than going to classes and doing homework. College for him is opening a door to endless opportunities in a very competitive world.
We asked him a few questions and this is what he had to say.
What does Black History Month mean for you?
To me, Black History Month is a time to reflect, educate, and remember all of the people who came before me that have paved the way, opened doors and stood against oppression to help give equal rights to all.
How important is it for a minority student to obtain a college degree?
In today's world, in my opinion, education is the common currency! It helps to level the playing field! The more educated we are, the better jobs, better pay, and typically better benefits we receive. 2yr or 4yr degree, it's very important to obtain a degree in Higher education!
What changes are you hoping to bring to our society by being in the Higher Education industry?
Awareness and Options! Every school is not for everyone. However, there is a school out there for all of us!
A really inspirational book to celebrate BHM and that every CW student should read is? Why?
I am currently reading two books that I would highly recommend. "Strength to Love", by The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr; and "The Fire Next Time", by James Baldwin. Strength to love is very relevant to what is happening in our modern society today, while The Fire Next Time speaks on the emergence of the Civil Rights movement!
What are your top 3 favorite singers/bands to celebrate BHM?
Bob Marley, Nipsey and Kendrick Lamar
The best advice I received when I was in college was?
Stay true to who you are! Don't be afraid to be a leader! (Thanks Dad!)
What CW students might not know about me is?
I modeled for Tommy Hilfiger for 2 years!
