The College of Westchester Professor Appears in Play that He Produces

Terry KeyesThe College of Westchester is proud to share that Prof. Terence Keyes of the General Education Dept. is currently producing the play “Equus,” a psychic thriller by Peter Shaffer, to be performed this summer at the Reid Castle in Purchase, NY. Keyes, who has worked in theatre as an avocation for decades, will portray Dr. Martin Dysart, a psychiatrist treating a teenager named Alan who blinded six horses.

Over the years, Keyes has performed at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck, the Tarrytown Music Hall, and An Evening Dinner Theatre in Elmsford. But he finds his current endeavor the most compelling. “Dr. Dysart is depicted as an expert child psychiatrist who’s also going through his own existential doubts – which makes him an incredibly rich, fascinating role,” explained Keyes.

Broadway Success

Equus” originally ran on Broadway for over 1200 performances, with the doctor initially played by Anthony Hopkins, followed by Richard Burton, Anthony Perkins, and Leonard Nimoy. In a revival years later, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter in the movies) made his Broadway debut as Alan. In Keyes’ production, Alan is portrayed by NYC actor Jude Segrest, who recently graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

“I have produced many plays over the years,” Keyes reflected, “but this one is unique, as it leads the audience through a kind of psychological detective story. You know from the start that Alan blinded the horses. It’s Dysart’s job to find out why, and Alan’s not a cooperative patient. So, the journey is riveting, suspenseful, and surprising.”

CW Marketing Intern

Nini KhujadgeKeyes described how impressed he is with CW Digital Media major Nini Khujadze, who the Office of Career Services arranged to work on the production as an intern. “Nini brings all her strengths as a creative and strategic content creator,” Keyes remarked, “and her original logo for the show is perfect!” While Nini learns the dynamics of enticing people to theatre performances, Keyes said the internship is a win-win for the show and for her.

An intimate, in-the-round production from Keyes’ company DayStar Creations, “Equus” will perform Thurs. through Sat., July 30-Aug. 1 at 7:30 pm and Sun., Aug. 2 at 3:00 pm. Intended for mature audiences, tickets are $25 general admission and $20 for groups of 10 or more. Tickets can be reserved at daystar.booktix.com/dept/main/e/Equus.
