National Distance Learning Week - Lauris Borbon

Today we’re ending National Distance Learning Week! The purpose of NDLW is to celebrate the power of distance learning to transform lives, improve lives and make a difference in our community. Lauris Borbon’s persistence is helping her achieve her dream of becoming a college graduate. It hasn’t been easy for her because everything seemed to be against her when she started her journey towards obtaining a college degree. However, as Henry Ford said, “When everything seems to be against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.”

Who or what inspires you to earn your degree at CW? Why?
My children, and my parents have inspired me to earn my degree aside of my own goals to one day be a business owner. I truly believe that saving for your children's education is the correct way to guide them towards success. The fact that my parents weren’t able to do it for me, now I feel an obligation to correct their mistakes.

How will earning your college degree change your life and the lives of your family members?
Earning my college degree will change both my family and my life in so many different ways. This degree will open opportunities that I currently don’t have. It will allow my kids to attend college debt free, it will help my family financially to do more things to keep us all together as well as grow together.

Who do you hope your story will inspire?
I hope my story inspires every person that has had to face debt, humiliation, stress, bullying, and most of all help those young people that always had a plan but because of not having the necessary resources to do so, if you put your mind to it and focus nothing can stop you. I personally had many friends and family members tell me that I won’t get to achieve my goals because I have two daughters and because they just don’t believe in me. Now I am three semesters away from accomplishing my first goal which is to graduate from college.

How has online learning influenced your opportunity to earn your degree? Would you have earned a degree if you were not able to attend online?
Online learning has influenced me in many ways. I am able to reach my goal of graduating while taking care of my children, work, care for the home, and still find time to enjoy quality time while completing my classes. I honestly believe that without online education I wouldn’t have been able to get this far.
