The New York League of Puerto Rican Women recently celebrated the 2017 College Awards Gala. The League honored nine community leaders, and presented 10 college scholarships to undergraduate Puerto Rican /Hispanic women selected for their academic excellence and service to the community.

Among the students awarded scholarships is CW student Luz Lopez. “Being Latina means having a deep appreciation of my background and understanding the great importance of family. In our society, I believe that women have fair and equal opportunities. I love helping people and I currently work for a Health Center that is being serving the community for over 24 years,” said Luz.

The NYLPRW is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization whose mission is the advancement of Puerto Rican and Hispanic women by providing them with the financial support necessary to obtain their college degree. Launching in in December of 2008, the League had its first College Awards Gala Diner in 2009, and has presented 77 College Awards to date.

Also, as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations, NYLPRW was recently invited to an on-field ceremony at the Yankee Stadium. The purpose of this Yankee’s initiative is to recognize the growing Latino presence among Major League Baseball players, the fans, and the media.

Congratulations to Luz Lopez for being a very inspiring Latina woman.
