Breast & Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Fri, 10/28/2016

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and once again, the Allied Health Club wanted to end the month on a positive note. The Student Center was decorated in pink and there were several items and food for sale. Students, staff, and faculty members wore something pink as well.

Students were encouraged to take care of themselves as they heard the story of a breast cancer survivor, “I think about it and I get very emotional because being diagnosed with breast cancer was a shocking moment for me. I’m still processing all this,” said Barbara Cervoni, Director of Services and Communication at an organization called Support Connection. “I was proactive, and that’s the most important message I have for you today. Take care of your own body, talk to your doctor and ask questions. Be your own advocate,” concluded Barbara.

In addition, Estelle Coffino, Director of Allied Health Programs at CW, shared her story as a breast cancer survivor. Students were moved and inspired by both Barbara and Estelle’s powerful stories. All the funds raised during the Breast Cancer Awareness event will go to Support Connection, Inc. This not-for-profit organization provides emotional, social, and educational support to women, their families and friends affected by breast and ovarian cancer. With offices in Yorktown Heights, NY, Support Connection helps people all over the country via their toll-free services.
