Medical Assisting Students sit in for a Live Cardiac Bypass

Wed, 08/03/2016

Dr. Wright's Anatomy and Physiology students had the opportunity to sit in and view, Live From...Cardiac Classroom. This is an innovative use of videoconferencing technology in a state-of-the art, 100-seat Interactive Theater in the Jennifer A. Chalsty Center for Science Learning and Teaching. The operating room was equipped with three cameras to view the operating room and surgical field, with video feeds from the vitals monitor and endoscope. Sound was provided by two wireless microphones, one worn by the surgeon and the other handheld microphone passed among the medical staff. The technician’s station in the OR has a cut-off switch to stop transmission in the event of a medical emergency.

The students were able to see and hear everything going on in the Operating Room at Morristown Medical Center. The Surgical staff could see the students and hear their questions. The surgeon performing the surgery as well as the Anesthesiologist, and Perfusionist answered questions about their roles and the procedures that was taking place during the surgery. During the surgery the students were able to see how the heart appears when there is no oxygen going to it. There was a point during the surgery where the heart actually stopped beating. Overall this was an amazing experience for our CW Students.
