Addicted to your Devices?

Tue, 07/05/2016

We often joke about being addicted to our phones, tablets, and other tech devices, but it can actually be a serious problem when it starts hurting productivity. When even WebMD is writing about smartphone addiction, you know it’s a big deal.

This article looks at some of the ways that tech addiction can amp up our stress levels—another productivity killer —as well as some tools that may be used to address the issue.

Students required to be online for school and work may find it hardest to reign it in, but there’s still hope. A few suggestions:

-Set yourself timers for work periods. Turn your phone or device to “Do Not Disturb” and close windows on your browser not related to work. Work until the timer sounds, knowing that once that timer sounds, you can spend some time on social media or checking email.

-Consider an app or service that temporarily restricts access to website, app, or other distraction that sucks up your time.

-Silence your phone or put it in a drawer or in your bag (not your pocket) while working.
