2018 clemson joseph gonzalez, garwayne mcgregor, david rivas

CW Students Joseph Gonzalez, Garwayne McGregor, and David Rivas recently participated at Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism in South Carolina to learn about what capitalism and morality are, and how to effectively fight for them. The students had the opportunity to join other students from across the U.S. and other countries.

“Being at Clemson University was an eye opener for a New Yorker. At my time at Clemson, I have encountered people with lifestyles different than my own, many of who lived simple lives. But these people have the same interest and passion as I do about economics and politics. Despite our differences in culture, beliefs, and political views, we were still able to have civil and educated discussions about the economy. At the end of the day, being in a small environment who supported one another and was willing to learn from one another made my experience at Clemson wonderful,” says Joseph Gonzalez.

ima student yahaira minchala

Management accountants are vital to the financial health of organizations. They make critical decisions, safeguard a company’s integrity, and plan for business sustainability. They might be CFOs and controllers, budget analysts and treasurers, or one of many other game changers on internal teams. However, every job opportunity in this field is highly competitive and every college student willing to succeed in the industry must learn the importance of differentiation early in their careers. Here’s where the IMA Accounting Honor Society comes in.

The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), is one of the largest and most respected associations of accountants and financial professionals focused exclusively on advancing management accounting. IMA has a global network of more than 80,000 members in 140 countries and 300 professional and student chapters. Since October 2018, The College of Westchester has hosted one of these prestigious IMA chapters.

CW student Yahaira Minchala was recently inducted into the prestigious IMA Accounting Honor Society. This distinguished honor society recognizes and honors academic achievement, provides an alumni network for lifetime connections, and advances the profession of accounting.

For Yahaira, being inducted into the IMA has been a very rewarding experience, “I am honored and excited to be inducted to the IMA Honor Society. It’s a privilege to be a part of this amazing Society. As an Accounting major, the opportunity to be recognized by a global organization was far beyond my expectations,” said Yahaira. Although this seems like an experience where many students will just sit down and enjoy, this is certainly not the case for Yahaira, “my future plans include being an entrepreneur. After completing my degree at CW, I’m going to prepare myself for the CMA exam and become certified. I also would like to obtain my MBA in Accounting.”

Congratulations to Yahaira for being inducted into this prestigious honor society.

The honor society admits those students who are in their junior or senior year majoring in Accounting, Finance, or Information Technology, who have completed a minimum of three accounting courses, and attained an overall accounting GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale).

cisco dream team david ortiz

“One of the best professional experiences ever,” that’s how David Ortiz describes his participation at the NBA-Cisco Dream Team at the NBA All-Star Game in New York City. Along with 29 students from different colleges and universities in our area, David assisted NBA techs in many aspects and locations that included Madison Square Garden, Waldorf Astoria Hotel, and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. “Whatever the NBA techs needed, we did,” said David. “We were setting up Cisco phones and we were constantly making sure there was connectivity between the wires. We set up access points, and switchers.”

From February 7-16th all the students were immersed into the program where Cisco and the NBA were the big players of the week, but David learned other valuable things outside the technology field, “Work as a team, don’t be afraid to designate work, and have fun with it. It was very exciting.”

The Dream Team included 30 students and 2 instructors and assisted the NBA IT staff in different areas where Cisco technologies played a crucial role. When asked if David was up to the task he responded, “I felt at an advantage compared to other students. There was a student who told me that Cisco was a self-study course at his college. My story is different; it’s always a hands-on experience… Also if you have questions my professor, Dr. Nwosisi, knows all the answers. I was very prepared for it.”

Congratulations to David Ortiz, and Dr. Nwosisi, CW Computer Networking Chairperson in the Evening Division for nominating his student for this valuable experience.

CW is one of 10,000 Cisco Networking Academies in 165 countries. The Cisco Networking Academy delivers a comprehensive, 21st century learning experience to help students develop the foundational information and communication technology (ICT) skills needed to design, build, and manage networks.

Congratulations to our Students of the Semester for the Day College; Nicole Kotash & Yexsi Ramos Alonzo!

As Student of the Semester recipients, Nicole and Yexsi demonstrate academic excellence and effort in their degree program and hold a minimum of a 3.8 GPA. Nicole and Yexsi were selected by the faculty as Students of the Semester in the Day College. Read about Nicole and Yexsi.

Nicole Kotash is enrolled in the Bachelor degree program in Accounting, and she holds a 4.00 cumulative GPA. She is a member of the Sigma Beta Delta Honors Society and has consistently earned Dean’s List recognition. In April of this year, Nicole received the Dr. William R. Papallo Scholarship from The College of Westchester Charitable Foundation (CWCF). Nicole recently attended The Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism (CISC) Spring Conference in South Carolina, which was sponsored by the CISC and the Foundation of Economic Education (FEE). Prior to attending CW, Nicole received her Associate degree in Criminal Justice-Corrections in 2014.

Nicole believes she has come this far due to the continuous support from her parents, older sister and boyfriend. She strives to make her family proud. In 2018, she decided to further her education in a field other than the major she chose for her Associate degree. With guidance from her aunt, who is an Alum of The College of Westchester, she decided to enroll at CW so she could earn her degree in a timely manner. Nicole is expected to graduate in December 2019. Her career goal is to land an accounting position at a well-known firm while working towards becoming a CPA.

Yexsi Ramos Alonzo is enrolled in the Associate degree program in Medical Assistant Management; she holds a 3.94 cumulative GPA and has earned Dean’s List recognition. Yexsi was born in Guatemala and moved to the United States at the age of 15. She attended Brewster High School and graduated in June 2016. She is the first member of her family to attend college. Yexsi chose The College of Westchester because of the small class size and career-oriented classes. She is expected to earn her Associate degree in Applied Science in April 2020. Yexsi also has an Associate degree in Liberal Arts.

Fall Term I and II 2019 - Adult College Student of the Semester

2019 fall term I and II adult college student of semester

Congratulations to our Adult College Students of the Semester, Claude Laviscount and Ardita Lufaj!

Claude Laviscount is enrolled in the Accounting program with a cumulative 4.00 GPA. She has consistently earned President’s List recognition and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Society. Claude is also a member of the Institute of Management Accountant. She was born in Antigua and Barbuda and worked for 27 years in the banking industry at Barclays Bank PLC, which would later become First Caribbean International Bank. Unfortunately, not having a college degree prevented her from securing the title of manager. After her daughter obtained her Bachelor’s degree, Claude decided that she had delayed her lifetime dream of earning a college degree for far too long and migrated to the United States.

Claude liked the accelerated programs offered at CW, as she could finish in a timely manner while continuing to work full time. She did have concerns of not being able to keep up with the younger students and feared being judged for not returning to school earlier, but Claude thanks her Admissions counselor, Seloi, for the support and encouragement. Claude is expected to graduate in November 2019. In the very near future, she will start an accounting consultancy business, specializing in taxation for small business and individuals. Claude believed that one can change the trajectory of their life once they are confident and diligent.

brave enough to fall

Having a successful career will offer you a lot of benefits and real meaningful opportunities. As we live in a world governed by social status and money, working your way up to the top will definitely improve your quality of life. Therefore, having a college education is instrumental for a successful, professional career. But this journey doesn’t always start in college. Cultivating a new generation of leaders, creators, and achievers is the impetus behind Brave Enough to Fail (BETF), a non-profit organization founded in October 2015 in Connecticut.

Brave Enough to Fail and The College of Westchester are thrilled to announce that they will work together to help cultivate a new generation of professionals. CW will provide up to ten $1,000 scholarships per year which BETF will make available to students at schools that it serves. The scholarships will be renewable as long as awardees remain full-time and in good standing. The first scholarships are available for the current school year and will be awarded in June 2019.

“We are very excited to be partnered with The College of Westchester, a top-notch institution that is dedicated to students and their success. Both organizations actively seek to serve students from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds and communities,” said Wayne Winsley, Executive Director and Founder of Brave Enough to Fail.

BETF is an organization that inspires and motivates high school and college students to strive for success by understanding and implementing options available to them. Since 2016, the organization has reached over 3,000 high school students and currently has requests for the Brave Enough to Fail program from high schools and school districts across 20 states. The organization encourages students to achieve their dreams by reinforcing several soft skills including, commitment, resilience, self-discipline, communication, and team work.

The College of Westchester has found in BETF a great ally to extend its mission of serving students from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds and communities. Both institutions are fully dedicated to preparing more young people to succeed in the modern and competitive workforce. “The College of Westchester is proud to partner with Brave Enough to Fail, as both organizations share the same commitment to student success and work to support academic and professional achievement,” said Matt Curtis Vice President of Enrollment Management at CW.

According to Wayne Winsley, this partnership will be the best platform to connect with more students, inspire them, and prepare them for a successful professional life, “This partnership means BETF will not only be able to reach and inspire more great students in places like The Bronx, Yonkers, New Rochelle, and Mount Vernon, we can now directly connect those motivated students to a solid resource to build the foundation for successful, relevant professional careers.”

google path to management

As a college preparing students for entry into the regional workforce with highly regarded programs in business and computer technology, it was only natural to have a representative of Google visit The College of Westchester’s campus. Google, one of the most innovative companies in the world, has been expanding its presence in New York City over the past decade and has become one of the biggest tech companies in the world, not just in the internet world, but among all business brands. Google’s products and services are different and unique, just like their leadership style.

James McCarthy, a Mobile Transformation Team Lead at Google visited Professor Paula Cancro’s Management Applications class to speak with students about the career path to becoming a manager, his personal managerial experiences, corporate problem solving, and how business teams can be most effective. He encouraged CW students to be proactive, take the initiative to volunteer in more projects, and be vocal to their superior about wanting to learn more in order to grow within the business.

Although this may have been Mr. McCarthy’s first visit representing Google, it was not his first visit to the College. Mr. McCarthy, a former technology analyst with Goldman Sachs, went on to help launch the global consulting firm, Digital Catnip, in 2015. While serving with Digital Catnip, Mr. McCarthy and Professor Cancro met at the 2016 Westchester County ‘Mobile Smart App Development Bowl’ where a student team from the College had submitted an entry. They had struck up a friendship and Professor Cancro invited him to the College for his first visit.

The Mobile Site Transformation Team led by McCarthy in Google’s New York offices in Chelsea, helps Google clients optimize their mobile web experiences through one-on-one consultations and scaled events across the country with the goal of improving customer experience on their client.
